Tames -vs- Skins

Elephants

Elephants are the largest and most visually dominant tames in Atlas, which makes them ideal for bold designs and clear markings. Due to their size and base coloring, contrast matters more here than on any other tame. Dark base elephants produce the strongest results, especially for black-heavy or high-contrast skins.

If visibility, authority, or organization matters, elephants are where visual systems shine.

Bears

Bears sit at the intersection of utility and combat. Their fur texture and movement can soften fine detail, so designs with strong shapes and clear contrast perform best. Medium-to-dark base colors tend to preserve definition more reliably.

Horses

Horses are fast, lean, and constantly in motion. Designs for horses favor simpler layouts that remain readable while sprinting or turning. High-detail graphics can get lost at speed, especially on lighter base colors.

If you care about identification during movement, less detail and stronger contrast will always win here.

Giraffes

Giraffes present unique challenges due to their height and segmented body proportions. Designs are optimized to remain readable from ground level and at distance, rather than relying on small details placed high on the body.

Rhinos

Rhinos are built for impact. Their bulk and forward-heavy movement favor bold, forward-facing designs that hold up during charges and close encounters. Subtle details tend to disappear once momentum kicks in.

High-contrast designs perform best, especially on darker base animals.

Crocodiles

Crocodiles have long, low silhouettes that favor horizontal flow over vertical detail. Designs are optimized to read along the body rather than across it, accounting for how the animal sits in water and moves on land.

Lions

Lions balance elegance and aggression. Their fur texture and coloration can dramatically affect final results, especially with darker overlays. Designs with controlled contrast and intentional placement maintain clarity without overwhelming the form.

Tigers

Tigers already carry strong natural striping, which can interact heavily with painted designs. Skins here are built to complement — not fight — the underlying pattern, avoiding visual overload.

If base color varies widely, expect noticeable differences between individual animals.

Spiders

Spiders have complex geometry, multiple legs, and frequent motion, making them one of the most challenging tames to skin cleanly. Designs prioritize central body readability and avoid leg-dependent details that break during movement.

High-contrast, simplified layouts perform best across lighting conditions.
